Intrauterine insemination
What is Intrauterine insemination(IUI)
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is a fertility treatment that involves the introduction of specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus, increasing the likelihood of fertilization. IUI is often recommended for couples who face challenges such as low sperm count, decreased sperm motility, or unexplained infertility. It can also be used in cases where a donor's sperm is used.
Why IUI is Done
IUI treatment is a simple and effective treatment procedure performed to enhance fertility and the chances of conception. A number of circumstances may require IUI:
Our IUI Process
Our IVF process is designed to be easy and stress-free while providing the best possible results. Our team of experienced fertility specialists will guide you through each step of the treatment, providing personalized care along the way.
Initial Consultation
Your journey with IUI begins with a comprehensive consultation with our fertility specialist. During this appointment, we will discuss your medical history, perform necessary diagnostic tests, and develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
Ovarian Stimulation
In some cases, ovarian stimulation may be recommended to enhance the chances of successful IUI. Medications are used to stimulate the ovaries, promoting the growth and development of multiple follicles and increasing the likelihood of producing healthy eggs.
Monitoring
Throughout the ovarian stimulation phase, our team will closely monitor your cycle through regular ultrasound scans and hormone level assessments. This helps us determine the optimal timing for the IUI procedure.
Sperm Preparation
On the day of the procedure, a semen sample will be collected from your partner or a sperm donor. The sample is then specially processed in our laboratory to isolate motile and healthy sperm, increasing the chances of successful fertilization.
Insemination
The prepared sperm sample is carefully inserted into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. This procedure is minimally invasive and typically painless, requiring no anesthesia.
Post-Procedure and Follow-Up
Following the IUI procedure, you will be advised on any necessary post-procedure care. Our team will provide guidance on activities to avoid and when to schedule a follow-up appointment for a pregnancy test.
Frequently Asked Questions

IUI is recommended when couples experience unexplained infertility as well as cervical hostility in the female patient and male infertility. When these conditions impact the ability of sperms to enter through the cervix into the uterus and fertilise the egg, IUI is the preferred treatment option.
In some cases of infertility, females may experience low ovarian reserve, infections in cervix making a hostile environment for sperms, tubal diseases where both fallopian tubes are compromised, and moderate to severe cases of endometriosis. In such cases, IUI is not a recommended process; rather, in vitro fertilisation would be the preferred option with better outcomes
The use case for IUI and IVF are different and the success rate of either depends on the patient’s case. IUI is a less invasive procedure that requires hormonal stimulation in the female and collected/donor sperms are placed inside the uterus; IVF in comparison requires more steps including ovum pickup, fertilisation of egg and sperm in the laboratory, laser assisted hatching, and embryo transfer.
Pre-workup tests are performed to ascertain that IUI will lead to the best outcome. We check that the patients are in good health, hormonal levels are optimal, at least one fallopian tube is functional to support ovulation, and a uterus that can see through a pregnancy. Egg development is closely monitored to determine the best time for sperm injection. Additionally, male fertility conditions that span sperm count, sperm motility and morphology, semen ejaculation are also checked to conclude if self or donor sperms will be required
In certain circumstances, IUI might not work out for a couple. If IUI is unsuccessful after 3-4 attempts, IVF may be recommended as the next step. This is in case infertility is attributed to severe male and/or female factor.
It is suggested that the male partner abstains from ejaculating for 2-3 days before the collection of a semen samples in order to collect the maximum number of sperms and ensure their quality. After the procedure is performed, it is safe to have sexual intercourse 3-4 days later
The cost of In Vitro Fertilization (IUI) can vary significantly depending on various factors, e.g the specific services included in the treatment package. It's essential to note that the cost is an investment in your fertility journey
After an IUI cycle, a pregnancy test will be performed, and you will be advised to take care of yourself while waiting for the results. Our team will provide post-cycle support and guidance.
